Did you know that your tooth enamel is among the hardest substances in your body? Despite being a tissue, enamel works incredibly hard to help you break down and chew your food. It comprises a portion of the tooth that also includes the dentin, pulp, and, cementum. Enamel is the outermost layer of the tooth.
Comprised almost entirely of minerals, the enamel is the most mineral-packed tissue in your body, meaning it can take on everything from biting down on hard foods to the temperatures of a freshly served hot beverage like tea.
Despite its incredible resilience and strength, even enamel is prone to erosion if it isn’t being properly taken care of. What’s worse, unlike other parts of the body that may renew themselves, enamel does not experience regrowth. This is why it’s so important to limit your intake of sugary and acidic foods like carbonated beverages. If you do decide to drink and consume such foods, you must brush and floss shortly after.
Enamel erosion can also be caused by things like teeth grinding or acid flux. Its symptoms include sensitive teeth, yellow teeth, unusually shiny spots on the teeth, or rough edges.
