Tips for Good Oral Health During the Thanksgiving Holiday

Families will get together this week to socialize and indulge in their favorite foods. Around the nation, tables will be piled high with turkey, stuffing, and a variety of pies and sweets. We want to give you some advice on how to take care of your oral health over the holidays from your Miami holistic dentist. Below is some dental advice for this Thanksgiving.

Be Careful Around Sweets

Sugar by itself does not result in a cavity. However, there are bacteria in your mouth that feed on sugar to produce harmful acid. Cavities may be caused by this acid. The strongest substance in the body, the enamel on your teeth, is strong enough to be eaten through by it. Please remember to brush your teeth after dinner or to rinse your mouth with water if you must indulge in a few sweets. The water will remove the sugar and food particles from your teeth before they can harm them.

Watch Out for Starches

Starches or carbohydrates have also been found to contribute to tooth decay. Similar to how sugars interact with bacteria, carbohydrates and starches also do so. We bring this up because so many Thanksgiving dishes—from the breads and stuffing to the pie crusts and even the potatoes—are laden with starches.

Avoid Teeth Discoloration

Red wine, coffee, tea, cranberry sauce can all result in dental stains. Dental stains can be harder to manage for some of us than for others. If you have trouble with stains, try to stay away from these foods during the holiday or thoroughly rinse your mouth after consuming these foods or drinks. And never forget that cosmetic dentistry teeth whitening is always an option if you’re not happy with the color of your teeth.

We wish you a happy, safe Thanksgiving filled with plenty of time spent with loved ones. Remember that your Miami holistic dentist is always here to assist you with all of your dental needs.
