Did you know: The dental materials used in the office and at home can have a profound impact on total body health. From the restorative material used for routine fillings to the fluoride in your toothpaste, each product has the potential to help– or hurt– the health of the teeth, gums, and body.
This summer, Assure A Smile invites South Florida families to learn more about biocompatible dentistry, a special application of holistic dentistry that focuses on using safe and non-toxic materials to promote total body wellness.
Biocompatible Dentistry at Assure A Smile
“Traditional dentists still use certain materials that are known to cause serious illness,” explains Dr. Theodore Herrmann, our practice founder and lead dentist here at Assure A Smile. “The most dangerous of those materials in dental amalgam, which contains high concentrations of mercury.”
Dental Amalgam: Why Silver Fillings Are Toxic
For those who do not know, dental amalgam is the metallic mixture that has traditionally been used to fill cavities and perform a number of other common restorative procedures. Holistic dentists have boycotted the material for nearly a decade or more, since it contains 50% or more mercury and has been tied to the development of serious health issues. Assure A Smile is an active leader in the mercury free dentistry movement as well, which helps to spread awareness for the dangers of dental amalgam to both patent health and the environment.
Fluoride: Good or Bad for Teeth?
Dental amalgam is just one toxin that holistic dentists advise patients to avoid, however. Another is fluoride, a controversial mineral that the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the American Dental Association, and various other health advocacy groups have promoted as a safe and effective method of preventing tooth decay. Despite such claims, there has never been a clinical trial that proves adding fluoride to public water actually prevents tooth decay. There is, however, a growing body of research indicating that the consumption of fluoride discolors the teeth (a condition called fluorosis) and causes serious harm to the digestive system, kidneys, brain, and other vital organs.
