This February, Assure A Smile raises awareness for children’s oral health needs. According to studies published by the Surgeon General, American children suffer from chronic tooth decay at alarming numbers, predisposing the nation’s youth to serious health issues. In the short run, high rates of tooth decay can lead to gum disease, infection, and gingivitis. Long term, however, the bacteria that causes gum disease has been found to also cause heart disease and increase the risk of stroke.
According to the Surgeon General, American children suffer with chronic tooth decay at about five times the rate as children suffer with asthma. Moreover, reports estimate that American children miss as many as 51 million school hours due to oral illness and treatment, demonstrating how oral health issues can have a negative impact on other aspects of childhood development.
This February, Dr. Herrmann raises awareness for these issues by encouraging South Florida families to stay proactive in brushing, flossing, eating well, and maintaining routine dental checkups together. Families are also invited to return to the Miami Dentist Blog each week for free holistic health tips, delicious recipes, and oral hygiene tips to create healthy teeth and gums for life.
