Ceramic, Zirconia and ZERAMEX® dental implants are innovative oral prosthetics that have grown in popularity due to their unique biocompatible makeup. Whereas titanium implants may have a systemic sensitivity for some patients, the extremely durable and “metal free” composition of zirconium makes it an ideal implant material with no history of adverse side effects. Dr. Herrmann invites patients to learn more about this revolutionary new material by reviewing this page. Patients may contact Assure A Smile online to learn more, or speak with a friendly member of our front desk at 305-274-0047.
What Are Ceramic Dental Implants?
Ceramic implants are made from zirconium, a material that closely resembles titanium. Zirconium is most widely recognized in its crystalline form—cubic zirconium—because it resembles a flawless diamond. Dental implants use a slightly different form of zirconium called zirconium oxide, or ZrO2. Although considered “metal free” by most dental professionals, zirconium oxide actually contains trace amounts of hafnium and yttrium (both are metals), though not enough to cause a reaction in the body.
What is the difference between Zirconia and ZERAMEX® implants?
While they are both constructed of zirconium and fall under the umbrella term of ceramic, Zirconia and ZERAMEX dental implants differ in structure and design. Zirconia implants come in a one-part system that minimizes bacterial growth and promotes better bone health. Meanwhile, ZERAMEX dental implants offer a two-part system that delivers superior flexibility and customization. Dr. Herrmann will suggest a mechanism based on your specific oral condition and needs.
How do ceramic dental implants work?
First, an evaluation is needed to determine if you are a candidate for a dental implant. Then, Dr. Herrmann uses CEREC technology to create precise digital impressions and surgical guides to ensure optimal implant alignment and functionality (see below: Planning for Implants).
Why are ceramic dental implants preferred by holistic dentists?
Ceramic implants, including both Zirconia and ZERAMEX, are preferred by holistic dentists because they are strong, durable, and more biocompatible than titanium alternatives.
Planning for Ceramic, Zirconia or ZERAMEX Dental Implants
Planning for dental implants is a vital step toward a healthier smile. Each patient represents a unique case, so an appointment and evaluation are critical. A few health conditions that may affect candidacy for dental implants include:
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Alcoholism
- Uncontrolled periodontal disease*
*To help patients control and reverse periodontal disease (gum disease), Dr. Herrmann recommends gum treatment with Perio Protect.
Once candidacy is confirmed, Dr. Herrmann evaluates the entire stomatognathic system to gather a holistic view of the entire oral cavity and surrounding jaw alignment. As part of this oral evaluation, the CEREC machine is used to gather digital video impressions with an unparalleled level of precision and accuracy. These “digital impressions” are fast, comfortable, and do not require any “goop” (plaster) trays. Using the digital impressions, Dr. Herrmann creates a surgical guide that enables optimal placement for long term implant durability, functionality, and aesthetics.
