Indeed, a sleep study conducted back in 2017 of more than 8,000 adults revealed that those who slept fewer than five hours a night showed greater tooth decay versus those that slept at least seven or more hours. Separate research also appears to suggest that failing to sleep properly is right behind smoking as a major risk factor in the development of gum disease.
Inside of the jaw, there is a bone known as the alveolar bone which contains the sockets where the teeth reside. Gum disease will cause that bone to experience degradation which, if left untreated, will cause the teeth to loosen and potentially fall out as the disease gets worse.
