In the March 2014 edition of The Lancet Neurology, one of the most prestigious medical research publications in the world, authors Dr. Phillippe Grandjean, MD and Philip J. Landrigan, MD officially classified fluoride as a neurotoxin. This recognition is a huge step for the holistic healthcare industry, and also a major announcement that helps patients across the globe take initiative in their overall well-being.
Back in 2006, the authors identified five basic neurotoxins: lead, methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, arsenic and toluene. Since then, research revealed six additional neurotoxins, one of which includes fluoride. The authors note that numerous neurotoxins have yet to be discovered so far. What they do know, however, is that neurodevelopmental disabilities such as attention-deficit disorder and autism seem to be increasing. Genetics play a role, but do not explain why cases of neurodevelopment disorders are skyrocketing. In fact, genetic factors are only the cause of an estimated 30 to 40 percent of cases. The other 70 percent of cases are linked to environmental exposures that impact early development of the human brain.
In a meta-analysis of 27 separate studies on children, research showed that the average IQ of children exposed to raised fluoride concentrations is around seven points lower than those exposed to lower concentrations of fluoride.
Beyond these recent findings, sodium fluoride has been linked to thyroid dysfunction, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Throughout the vast majority of European countries, fluoridated water is banned. China, home to the largest human population in the world, is another country that opposes fluoride in tap water. Only 5 percent of the world fluoridates its water, including the United States.
Now that the dangers of fluoride are clear, patients have the choice to remove this new neurotoxin from their everyday life. Always opt for a toothpaste without fluoride in the natural health section of your local grocery store. Further, opt for bottled water or a filtration pitcher for clean and neurotoxin-free drinking water.
