Sleep is one of those things that if you aren’t getting enough of it, the side effects will make themselves increasingly known. You’re probably aware that too much or too little sleep is no good for you. It can lead to lethargy, poor mental function, irritability, and it may also increase the odds of heart disease or developing conditions like diabetes, for example.
However, did you know that sleep also has an effect on your oral health?
Last year, the Journal of Periodontology published a study involving data from more than 3,000 adults above the age of thirty. These individuals participated in a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2013 and 2014. The results showed that the ones who slept well for at least seven hours or more each night had 40% lower odds of developing severe gum disease even when taking into account factors such as age or if they smoked.
