All About Enamel

Enamel is the outermost layer of the teeth responsible for protecting them from wear and tear. It is also responsible for protecting them from being sensitive and experiencing pain. Should the enamel erode, the teeth will become and cavities may occur, necessitating a filling. Despite the risks, the enamel is one of the body’s hardest tissues, comprised of minerals found in the bones like calcium and phosphate.

Though enamel is known for being hard, erosion can occur. The saliva we produce is always trying to maintain a balance in the mouth. If acid enters the mouth, saliva will attempt to neutralize so it doesn’t cause harm. If there is too much acid or the mouth isn’t producing sufficient saliva, the acid cannot be neutralized properly, which leads to the erosion of enamel.

Foods and drinks that have high levels of acid like carbonated beverages, fruit juices, and sour candy can all cause tooth erosion. As a general rule, anything sour should be either avoided or consumed in moderation. People with conditions like acid reflux should also be extra careful about the food they consume and receiving regular dental check-ups.
