Vitamin D Does a Mouth Good

Vitamin D is important for oral health, and it also assists in keeping the immune system in good shape. Furthermore, it can potentially fight off the symptoms of fatigue or depression. With summer just around the corner, there will be plenty of opportunities to absorb some vitamin D.

Did you know that vitamin D can also assist the gums by fighting inflammation? To be precise, it’s vitamin D3 that does most of the work. A study published in the Journal of Periodontal Research took a closer look at how vitamin D and periodontal (gum) health are related, using lab mice. Research showed that a restriction of vitamin D resulted in the loss of the bone in the upper jawbone while also increasing gum inflammation.

Hence, if you aren’t getting enough vitamin D, you may be affecting your oral health as well as increasing the odds of developing diseases such as osteoporosis.
