Better Mental Health With Engaging Activities

You’re likely aware that your physical health will be negatively affected if you don’t perform some kind of physical activity. For mental health, the same applies. It is important to activate the brain to ensure that it stays sharp as an individual ages.

The risk of experiencing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) was measured by a survey affecting more than 1,500 participants at least 70 years of age, a condition that can lead to memory issues such as recalling where anything was left or having difficulty coming up with the right words while communicating. The respondents were interested in hobbies such as playing sports, doing art, or reading books. As expected, those that participated in such activities showed a much lower risk of experiencing cognitive decline. Those who engaged in mentally stimulating actions showed a much lower rate of cognitive impairment, as predicted.

One research found that art traditions such as quilting and weaving were associated with diminished risks of mild cognitive impairment. Using a machine and playing games is useful as well. Reduced risk of developing MCI by as much as 50 percent was associated with participating in any of these activities.

They may act as a marker for a healthy lifestyle, as a person who enjoys book reading will be more likely to eat healthily, work out, and cope with stress positively, as to why it is necessary to engage in cognitive habits.

Relevant foods that may be beneficial for MCI include vitamin B12 in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, which may decrease brain atrophy. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) found in coconut oil and MCT oil can also benefit.
